Adopting A Greyhound

Adoption Process

If you are interested in adoption, there are several ways to apply:

• Submit the online application
• Print a copy of the online application and return by mail
• Call our message line to request an application through the mail

When the application is received by James River Greyhounds, a confirmation e-mail is sent to the potential adopters informing them that JRG has received the application. A short phone interview is then conducted, explaining our adoption process, reviewing the application and setting up a home visit. Home visits are conducted by one or two people, bringing along a Greyhound that is similar to the request on the application. This way, applicants can see what a Greyhound looks like and how they behave in their home.

When the application is approved, the applicant(s) are notified and the adoption is scheduled. If the Greyhound is arriving from the track, adopters are welcomed and encouraged to meet and bathe their new hound prior to taking them home. If your Greyhound is already in foster care, we will arrange for a time that is convenient to bring the hound to your home.

Our adoption donation is $250.00, which includes:

Before Adoption:

• Spay or Neuter (Vet exam at this time)
• Heartworm Blood Test and Prevention
• Rabies Vaccination
• DHPPC Vaccination
• Dental Care
• Thorough worming with Drontal Plus
• Flea & Tick Preventative
• Ears cleaned, Nails Clipped & Groomed
• Transportation of Greyhound from track kennel to James River Greyhounds
• If applicable, personal care and transition training in the loving homes of our foster families!

Your Adoption Kit includes the following:

• Martingale collar and matching 6 foot lead - designed specifically for a Sighthound
• Track Muzzle, Dental Kit
• Toy & Compressed Rawhide bone

We can also supply you with an Easy Fold Travel Crate (42" for $90.00 or 48" for $110.00) at the time of Adoption.
