Update regarding James River Greyhounds adoptions - 9/27/2020
Florida Greyhound Racing is set to end on December 31, 2020 because of legislative action by the Florida state government and voted on by the residents of Florida. There are only two remaining greyhound race tracks active in Florida. Currently, greyhound racing remains active beyond 2020 in Iowa, West Virginia and Arkansas. We are also investigating greyhound racing in other countries that may provide available retired racing greyhounds at a higher adoption fee in the future.
Over the last year, the overall number of available retired racing greyhounds has continued to diminish. As we have moved through this year, with limited availability of hounds AND with all related circumstances with COVID-19, we have received many applications resulting in a current waitlist for available hounds. We thank each potential adopter that has submitted an application for their patience as we work through the new processes for approving applications in the new normal.
With all of the above in play as we wind down 2020, effective September 27, 2020, JRG will close applications for new adopters until further notice. JRG will open the adoption/application process to previous adopters of retired racing greyhounds for the next 2 months (October & November 2020).
While JRG appreciates all adopters, with all that is going on, we want to give what may be the true ‘last call’ for adopting a retired racing greyhound in a timely fashion to previous adopters desiring to bring another retired racing greyhound into their family.
If you are a previous adopter who has adopted from JRG/GPA Richmond in the past or has adopted from another group in the past AND live in the area served by JRG, and if you will be ready to adopt within the next two to four months, please send an inquiry email to email@example.com expressing your interest and what you are looking for in your next family member.
As all of our volunteers continue to work to educate about, advocate for and adopt out all of the retired racing greyhounds that pass through our doors, we send a BIG THANK ROO!
None of us really know what the future will hold in the next year, but as we are able to obtain retired racing greyhounds from remaining tracks, we will continue to do so. JRG and GLR will continue to seek donations and investigate other sources to continue to bring retired greyhounds into the central Virginia area.
We will update this website if the application process is reopened for new adopters and if there are changes to the mission of JRG and GLR.
About James River Greyhounds
James River Greyhounds is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding responsible, caring homes for retired racing greyhounds in the Central Virginia area including the Richmond Metro Area, west to the Charlottesville area, east to the Williamsburg/Newport News area, and south of the Fredericksburg area. Since 1989, we have found "forever homes" for more than 1350 greyhounds - and counting! We are now partnered with Greyt Love Retirement (GLR) to bring even more greyhounds into the region! GLR provides a shelter to foster greyhounds while they await their forever homes.
